(Mohd Khalil vs Union of India)

The plea has sought directions to the Central Government to frame rules, regulations or guidelines to govern reporting or broadcasting of any and all news associated to any criminal investigation by any media channel.

It is the Petitioner’s concern that Arnab Goswami and his news channel, have been reporting “distorted and misleading facts” related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput resulting in the infringement of the right to fair trial of actor Rhea Chakraborty.

The petition has alleged that the journalist and the news channel are on a “witch hunt” against Rajput’s friend Rhea Chakraborty and are behaving as “judge, jury and executioner” to influence the public opinion against her.

The Petitioner has also sought that contempt of court proceedings be initiated against Goswami and his media company for the alleged “prejudicial reporting” of the Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

The PIL was listed for physical hearing on Friday before a Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan.

The matter would be heard next on November 9th, a virtual hearing date.
