The National Commission for Women and National Legal Services Authority started on a joint maneuver and launched a campaign to empower women through legal services, to commemorate the 74th Independence Day of the nation. The campaign was set in motion by Justice Ramana, and aims to make women aware of the channels available for grievance redressal.
In his presidential address, Justice Ramana remarked: “The source of inequity within our society often lies in lack of awareness and resources to take advantage of the laws.” On this occasion, Rekha Sharma (Chairperson, NCW) said that “unless women know of their legal rights, there can be no women empowerment.”
The campaign has been launched in 285 districts in 8 states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. The objective is to conduct awareness initiatives among women of these districts with the intention of making them aware of their rights and the protection being offered to them under a number of laws and how to actualize those rights. Another aim is to familiarize the targeted women with the latest policies so they can benefit from them.
